Miss your departure time by twenty minutes and a calm morning becomes a sprint through Terminal 5. Leave two hours too early and you are sitting on a bench outside a check-in desk that has not opened yet.
This guide works out the right departure time from Cambridge, Huntingdon, St Neots, St Ives and Cambourne to every major London airport. It uses real drive times, the airports’ own arrival advice and the traffic patterns we see every day as a local airport transfer company.
The simple formula
Work backwards from your flight:
Leave home = flight time − airport arrival time − drive time − traffic buffer
The sections below give you each of those numbers.
Step 1: How early to arrive at the airport
Heathrow’s own guidance is to arrive 2 hours before a short-haul flight and 3 hours before a long-haul flight. Heathrow also asks passengers not to turn up much earlier than that, because check-in desks are not open and early arrivals crowd the terminal.
Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and London City work to similar windows. Always check your airline’s bag-drop closing time, which is usually 40 to 60 minutes before departure, and is the deadline that actually matters.
If you have checked in online and only have hand luggage, you can safely trim 30 minutes from a short-haul arrival. For long-haul, keep the full 3 hours.
Step 2: Drive times from Cambridge
These are typical door-to-terminal times from central Cambridge in normal traffic.
Airport | Distance | Typical drive | Add at peak times |
|---|---|---|---|
Stansted (STN) | 30 miles | 35–45 min | +15 min |
Luton (LTN) | 40 miles | 55–65 min | +20 min |
London City (LCY) | 65 miles | 1 hr 25 min | +30 min |
Southend (SEN) | 70 miles | 1 hr 25 min | +20 min |
Heathrow (LHR) | 80 miles | 1 hr 35–1 hr 50 min | +30–45 min |
Birmingham (BHX) | 100 miles | 1 hr 50 min | +30 min |
Gatwick (LGW) | 110 miles | 1 hr 55 min–2 hr 15 min | +45 min |
Peak times are weekday mornings from roughly 6:30 to 9:30, weekday evenings from 16:00 to 19:00, and Friday afternoons. Heathrow and Gatwick both depend on the M25, which is where most delays happen.
Step 3: When to leave Cambridge for a 10:00 flight
Here is the formula applied to a weekday flight departing at 10:00, with the peak buffer included because you would be driving in the morning rush.
Airport | Short-haul: leave by | Long-haul: leave by |
|---|---|---|
Stansted | 07:05 | 06:05 |
Luton | 06:40 | 05:40 |
London City | 06:05 | 05:05 |
Heathrow | 05:45 | 04:45 |
Gatwick | 05:00 | 04:00 |
For a different flight time, shift the whole table by the same amount. A 13:00 flight to Heathrow means leaving at about 08:45, although at that hour you should still allow the full peak buffer because you will hit the end of the morning rush.
Leaving from outside Cambridge
Add or subtract these minutes from the Cambridge drive times above.
Leaving from | Heathrow | Gatwick | Stansted | Luton |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Cambourne | −5 min | −5 min | +10 min | −10 min |
St Neots | −10 min | −5 min | +25 min | −20 min |
Huntingdon | same | same | +20 min | −5 min |
St Ives | +10 min | +10 min | +15 min | +5 min |
St Neots and Huntingdon sit close to the A1(M), which makes Luton and Heathrow quicker to reach than you might expect. Stansted is the one airport that is noticeably further from the west and north of the county. For full routes from each town, see our Huntingdon airport transfers, St Neots airport transfers, St Ives airport transfers and Cambourne airport transfers pages.
Early-morning flights
The first wave of departures leaves between 06:00 and 07:30, and this is where most people get the timing wrong. The roads are empty, so the drive is quicker, but the airport is at its busiest because every early flight checks in at once.
For a 06:30 short-haul flight from Stansted, leave Cambridge at about 03:35. For a 06:30 flight from Heathrow, leave at about 02:35. At that hour you do not need the peak buffer, but keep 15 minutes spare for overnight roadworks and closures on the M11 and M25, which are common.
Half-term and Christmas getaways
During school holidays, add another 15 to 30 minutes on top of everything above. Late October half-term, the Friday before Christmas and the first weekend of the summer holidays are among the busiest days of the year at every London airport.
The bottleneck at these times is usually bag drop and security rather than the road. Check in online the day before, pack liquids in a clear bag that is easy to reach, and keep passports in your hand luggage, not your suitcase.
The bit nobody can plan for: the M25
Every table above assumes a normal day. An accident at the Dartford Crossing or a closure between junctions 10 and 16 can add an hour without warning.
This is the real case for a pre-booked airport transfer over driving yourself. Your driver checks traffic before setting off and adjusts the pick-up time if the roads look bad, and we monitor your flight so a delay on the return does not leave you stranded. Airport drop-off and pick-up charges are included in the price, so there is no card to fumble at the barrier (see our airport parking vs transfer cost guide for how those charges add up).
